Both Nanaimo marine rescue units responded at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, to a flare reported over Nanaimo Harbour west of Protection Island. Both boats responded and searched for two hours until stood down by the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC when nothing was found.
Though no evidence was found, it is possible that early Canada Day partiers may have set off the flare Everyone is reminded that flares are not fireworks, they abe to be used only in actual emergencies.
